SERIOUS ABOUT SOUND

DACS Magix Ms. Pinky Pearl Peterson Triple P Soundman Ursa Major

Interdimensional Wrecked Set

Simple and inexpensive virtual vinyl control of your .wavs and .mp3s and video!!

Ms. Pinky's I.W.S. system has two uses.  Firstly it allows you to use your turntables to control playback of sound and video files and secondly as possibly the most fun, hands-on controller for the Max/MSP development  environment.  The I.W.S. ships as four vinyl 12 inch  "records"  and downloadable software, and makes use of basic analogue DJ and digital music production technology you probably already own.

The System

Connecting your turntables to your computer soundcard (or audio interface), via a simple phono preamp, the specially encoded vinyl enables the software to read the position of the needle and the speed of the record, then apply that to mp3, wav or movie files*.

Example setup

So, by moving the vinyl back and forth on the turntable, you are sending a stream of information.  This is then translated by the software which then applies it to the files you select.

Connect the outputs of your soundcard back into your DJ mixer and suddenly you can mix any sound file from your hard disk as you would record from your record box!  Throw in the ability to mix video* and you have a full DJ/VJ setup!!  This doesn't mean you're confined to only playing files from your hard disk - Ms. Pinky also features a "pass-thru" mode, which will allow you to mix your normal vinyl records alongside your mp3 and wavs, without rearranging your set up!!

Mac Software

The Binky Toy software enables you to use the IWS system in a stand alone capacity, on a Macintosh system.  Load a list of the files (.wav, .mp3, .aif) you want to be able to control for each turntable,  insert FX, control panning, apply filters and determine how the software will respond to the movement of the vinyl.

Play a whole DJ set of your unpublished music from hard disk!

PC Software (and Max patch)

The Maxi Patch software is both the stand alone interface for Windows XP users, and also enables you to use the I.W.S. system within Cycling '74's Max/MSP environment.  It allows you to cue up and effect .wav, .mp3, .aif and quick time video!   Taking advantage of the flexibility available from Max/MSP, the patch allows you to apply filters and effects to audio and video files, and gives you control over related aspects such as colour adjustment and "scratch equalisers".

When used in the Max/MSP development environment (related Max externals and objects are also included) it gives you the option of using your analogue turntables as simple playback control devices or as  sources of controller data in a larger patch.

However, integrate this as an object into a Max/MSP patch, and positional data from the IWS set can be interpreted in any way you wish controlling anything you want..
