Frequently Asked Questions: Q: What is the best OKM mic for my use? A: Look at the OKM application table for a basic guide. If you need any more help, or want to know more information about the different OKM models, please contact us.
Q: Do I really need the A3 adapter? A: Although the mics can run off plug in power from most MD or DAT recorders, we strongly recommend that you use the A3 with the OKMs. First of all, it gives the mic power, resulting in a better dynamic range and a less noisy recording, especially when recording to portable devices such as MD. The A3 also features a bass roll-off (300Hz cut off frequency) and 20dB attenuator switch. For very loud sounds, the power from the A3 also allows the user to plug the mic into a LINE input of a device. To sum up, using the A3 produces a much better quality recording than without it!
Q: What batteries does the A3 adapter use? A: The A3 uses a 6V battery. You receive 2 with the mics when you buy them, and battery life is approximately 100 hours. Replacement batteries can be purchased from us. They can also be found in good hardware stores and camera shops, although we can supply them at the best price.
Q: What is the output plug from the mics? A: Output is via a stereo 3.5mm mini jack. Most DAT and MD recorders will have this type of mic input. We can also provide a mini jack to XLR converter if you need to record into a device with XLR inputs.
Q: Can I use Phantom Power with the mics? A: No. Phantom Power will damage the mic. If you do require the mic to plug into a phantom power device, we recommend our PPA Phantom Power Adapter, which converts the 48V Phantom Power into 7.5V for use with the mics, whilst giving a much better signal to noise ratio.
Q: What is binaural recording? A: Binaural recording is the recording and reproduction of sound as perceived by human hearing. This is achieved by placing microphones in the ears to create the stereo image of what we hear extremely accurately. The OKMs are especially designed to be placed in the ears to create this binaural effect, although they can also be used as lavalier or boundary layer mics.
Q: Do I have to listen to my recordings through headphones to reproduce the binaural effect? A: If you want to recreate the 3D binaural qualities of OKM recordings, listening through good headphones is the only way to achieve that. That said, the OKMs are very good stereo mics in their own right, and although you will not get the binaural effect without headphones, you will still achieve accurate stereo recordings, which will still sound great when played back through speakers.
Q: What are the technical specifications of the mics? A: See the DACS Documentation page for technical specifications.
Q: Can I monitor my recordings through the OKMs? A: No. Although they look similar to portable CD or minidisk earphones, the OKMs are microphones only.
Q: How can I order the OKM mics? A: We accept all major credit cards (excl. American Express), Switch and cheque. Next day delivery within the UK is free. Please ring for information on prices, or to order. For next day delivery, you must place your order by phone before 3.00pm.
