DACS design, build and install new 5.1 surround mastering studio

Octagon Records gave DACS a space in which to design, construct, build and install a new mastering studio. Below is a brief description of the work we carried out.

Design stage

  • Basic room shape and construction designed; materials decided

Analysis of room designed by DACS

  • Drawings produced
  • Reverberation times calculated and plotted
  • Frequency modes calculated and plotted
  • Bonello curve calculated and plotted
  • Findings of results discussed with client
  • Target figures established

Design stage 2

Final room design with any modifications to shape and materials to meet targets

  • Furniture and studio fixtures designed
  • Quantity and type of Absorbers designed
  • Cable routing designed
  • Cable schedule designed
  • Patch bay schedule designed
  • Speaker system and layout designed
  • Layout of equipment and studio designed
  • Rack space and rack equipment placing designed
  • Power supply designed

Cabling

  • Cables manufactured as per schedule
  • Patch bays soldered and normalised where necessary, as per schedule

Testing stage 1

  • All cables and patch bays tested

Equipment

  • Speaker system comprising 3 x Genelec 1030s, 2 x 1019s and 1 x 1092

Build

  • Room constructed as per specification in design
  • Absorbers constructed
  • Furniture manufactured
  • Speaker and television housing constructed

Installation

  • Absorbers installed
  • Studio fittings and fixtures installed
  • Cable installed
  • Electrics installed
  • Studio furniture installed
  • Equipment installed

Testing stage 2

  • All equipment and routing tested
  • Sound system tested and calibrated using WinMLS
  • Reverb times measured
  • Sound pressure levels (sound proofing) measured
