"Kazbar and their whole team have put together a wonderful studio. It’s incredibly flexible whether it be for tracking, mixing or working to picture in all of the rooms at once or independently. Not only that it has a wonderful sound and their care, precision and unrivalled advice is reflected in every aspect."
Working together with Kazbar Systems to help design and construct a bespoke multi-room recording facility in the heart of London.
Nick Lloyd-Webber needed a permanent home for his recording projects in the heart of London. Kazbar Systems was commissioned to build the multi room facility, and DACS’ Douglas Doherty was appointed as designer.
After looking at a number of options the brief was agreed – 4 rooms that could be interconnected to work as 1 control room and 3 live rooms or work as two independent control/live combinations.
Acoustically there were many challenges. The studio complex was immediately below office accommodation and residences. There was a large smoke duct running right through the space from a domestic stairwell to an external lightwell. The office couldn’t be distracted by the studio, and both ends of the smoke duct needed to be effectively silent. In addition, the independent operation of two control/live room set ups, required very good isolation. Specifications were agreed, and the design and subsequent construction achieved figures well within the required performance.
For acoustic treatment we used DACS designed bass absorbers working down to 35Hz and a combination of mid/hi absorption to create beautifully smooth and controlled sound in all the rooms. The approach in the control rooms was different to the live rooms; slightly longer RTs in the live spaces, and a more focussed quality with shorter RT in the control spaces..
The flush mounted Genelec 1038s in the main control room create super solid imaging with a deep and wide soundfield. The room performed so well that only a minor SAM* adjustment to allow for the reflections from the large Audient ASP console was made by Andy Bensley from Source Distribution.
